How Does DTF Printing Work
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing is an innovative process that allows you to transfer designs onto various fabrics with stunning detail and durability. Here's a step-by-step explanation of how it works:
1. Design Preparation
- Create or select a digital design using graphic design software.
- Ensure the design is set with appropriate dimensions, resolution, and colors.
- Use CMYK + White ink layers in your design for optimal results.
2. Printing the Design on PET Film
- A specialized DTF printer prints the design onto a PET film (a transparent film with a specific coating to hold ink).
-
Inks Used:
- CMYK inks for vibrant colors.
- White ink to create a solid base for the design, ensuring it appears vivid on dark or light fabrics.
- The printer lays down the white layer last, covering the CMYK colors.
3. Applying Adhesive Powder
- After printing, a hot-melt adhesive powder is evenly applied to the wet ink on the PET film.
- The adhesive powder ensures the design sticks firmly to the fabric during the heat transfer process.
4. Curing the Film
- The PET film, now coated with adhesive powder, is cured using heat.
- This step activates the adhesive and ensures it bonds well with the printed ink.
5. Heat Press Transfer
- The cured film is placed ink-side down onto the desired fabric (T-shirts, hoodies, bags, etc.).
- A heat press is used to apply heat and pressure:
- Typical temperature: 280-325°F (140-165°C)
- Press time: 10-15 seconds
- This process transfers the design from the PET film to the fabric.
6. Peeling the Film
- After heat pressing, the PET film is peeled away, leaving the design perfectly adhered to the fabric.
- Depending on the material and adhesive, the peel may be done while hot, warm, or cold.
7. Post-Press (Optional)
- For enhanced durability and finish, a final press is applied after peeling.
- This step improves the design's feel, ensuring it’s smooth and securely bonded.
